On the surface of Bonn

A few weeks ago I was invited to visit two friends living in Bonn, a lovely city in North Rhine-Westphalia and the former seat of government of West Germany. Autumn had just begun and the leaves were starting to turn into the most beautiful colours. Though I only got to see a relatively small part of this vast city, I was quite surprised by its diversity. Being one of the oldest cities in Germany, Bonn has seen it all, including Roman settlement, pillaging Vikings and Normans, generous electoral princes, the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven, destruction by war and a new (and in part temporal) rise to political power.

While my friends provided me with interesting facts and tried to show me some parts of the beautiful mosaic that forms the city, I always felt like there was even more to see and every glimpse at its history lead to even more questions. So I decided to focus on a few pieces of the puzzle at a time. I mostly stuck with the colours green, yellow and dark grey and tried to capture the surface and mix of materials : rustling and dry leaves, soft and lush moss, smooth and polished metal and ancient but enduring stone. All pictures were taken in the district of Bad Godesberg, mostly around the fortress ruins and the cemetery, where nature meets culture and yet far from the touristy centre of the City, a peaceful and beautiful place to start discovering the surface of tessellated Bonn.
